"Flower Essences"
David Lorenz Winston
In a way it is easier for me to be in the presence of a flower than to photograph one--especially when I am trying to convey its essence. After all, a photograph is solely a visual experience. On the other hand, a real flower delights our senses of sight, smell, touch, and if we are very still our hearing.
Flowers remind us of the joy that is present in the universe. When I photograph a flower my desire is to celebrate its unbridled delight in being and to honor its fertility, vigor and life force. I need to sit with a flower, often some time, before I discover a way to express its essence through the camera. It is my hope that the deep respect I feel for flowers is communicated in this body of work. - DW
